The concept of using water as a cleanser isn't exactly breaking news — but micellar water is a whole different story. It dates back over a hundred years and although French women swear by this product, American women are just dipping their toes into it.

So what is micellar water? It's made up of gentle, oil molecules called micelles that are attracted to dirt, oil, and makeup to remove impurities of the skin. Perhaps the best part is that it doesn't dry out your skin, which is why it can be used as an all-in-one face wash, makeup remover, and moisturizer — and that's exactly why beauty editors and skincare buffs are obsessed.

Since it doesn't require any water to rinse, this multi-purpose product is perfect for those on the go. It's a great way to freshen up after a long day of work or traveling. Although it's quite effective when used alone, it can be used with other products as well for a deeper clean. Just note if you're wearing waterpoof makeup, you may need to pair it with an additional makeup remover.

Micellar water can almost work for just about anyone with any skin type, but it's especially recommended for people with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin. If you have oily skin, you may find that it's not as effective for cleansing.

As far as brands, there's an increasing variety of options, including Bioderma (which kicked off the micellar water craze). Below, Susan Yara mentions a few of her favorites in the episode of The Cut — watch the full video below and tell us in the comments if you'll be adding micellar water into your beauty routine!
