Kylie Jenner's Lips: How To Remove Filler
Since 2015, Kylie Jenner's lips have not only become a hot topic of discussion but an integral part of her brand and signature look.
At first, Jenner contributed her noticeably-plumper appearance to an overdrawn lip liner technique. As people who know fillers, we weren't surprised when she finally did admit that visible change was due to an in-office treatment, not a makeup artist or a Lip Kit from Kylie Cosmetics.
Although, we were surprised when Kylie debuted a more subtle lip in a post to her 110 million Instagram followers over the weekend. She even replied to a fan's comment and cleared the air: "I got rid of all my filler," followed by three consecutive shocked face emojis. Us too, girl.
Even so, we can't help but notice Kylie Jenner's lips are still plumper than they were pre-fillers. Did she simply stop getting filler or were they dissolved? To answer this burning question, we reached out to Dr. Karan Dhir, a Beverly Hills facial and reconstructive plastic surgeon who’s known for natural-looking lip injections due to his bow-and-arrow technique and happens to be our go-to aesthetic expert on our Mixed Makeup YouTube channel, PLASTIC.
According to Dr. Dhir, the lip handles fillers differently than other areas of the face since it’s a constantly mobile area with a high blood supply. While results can last anywhere from 3-12 months, rare cases can last longer depending on the patient. “When done often, sometimes patients feel that they begin to last longer but this may be due to the fact that patients usually don’t allow the lips to completely return to their normal shape so there is a combined treatment effect,” Dr. Dhir says.
If you want to dissolve the filler completely, a medication is injected into the area called hyaluronidase, a naturally-occurring enzyme in the body that metabolizes hyaluronic acid. As for the people, like Kylie, who’ve done injections for years, Dr. Dhir notes that the lip would return to the shape that it would have looked like at the current age of the patient.
Is there a possibility Kylie had more permanent work done? While Dr. Dhir doesn’t know her history of lip treatments, he does mention there are long-lasting results available, including fat transfer or lip implants. “Fat transfer is an excellent option when done correctly, but fillers have reduced the frequency of this treatment since becoming an easy and safe option performed in an office setting.” But as for implants, Dr. Dhir personally won’t perform implants because highly-mobile areas, like the lips, are more likely to become infected or move.
